Heritage Malta

Heritage Malta is the national agency for museums, conservation practice and cultural heritage, entrusted to ensure that cultural heritage is protected and made accessible to the public. The Melita Foundation will be assisting with the Olea project, which will include excavations and carbon-dating of an olive grove in the vicinity of the Roman Villa.

Olea project

The Melita Foundation will be assisting with the Olea project, which will include excavations and carbon-dating of an olive grove in the vicinity of the Roman Villa.

The Olea project is a large-scale archaeological project that will investigate two main research areas within this site, in the vicinity of the Roman Villa in Rabat. The project involves studying, preserving, and propagating around 20 olive trees reputed to be about 2000 years old. This project will analyse the age of these trees through state-of-the-art Carbon dating. The project also involves the archaeological excavations within selected areas of the site, particularly zones where a previous ground-penetrating radar exercise identified significant structures to reconfirm the results obtained before.

Working together for a better future

Since our launch in 2020, The Melita Foundation has supported dozens of projects run by many diverse organisations. Project beneficiaries range from the very young to the very young-at-heart, from the the very local – such as supporting STEM skills development for school children in the Three Cities – to projects which will have an impact beyond our borders: supporting extensive tree planting; developing skills in maritime law and conservation; preserving parts of our heritage entwined with our diaspora.
